China approves world’s first invasive BCI medical device

China has approved the world’s first invasive Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) medical device for market use, marking a major step toward clinical application of the technology.

China’s National Medical Products Administration cleared the device developed by Neuracle Medical Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., which helps patients with tetraplegia caused by cervical spinal cord injuries regain hand grasping ability through a pneumatic glove controlled by decoded brain signals.

The system includes a BCI implant, electrode array, neural signal transmitter and receiver, and brain-signal decoding software. Clinical trials showed the device significantly improved patients’ hand movement and daily functioning.

BCI technology has been identified by China as an “industry of the future” and is expected to play a growing role in sectors such as healthcare, industry, and education during the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period.
