South Africa summoned US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III over “undiplomatic remarks” made during visits to key historical sites, the government said Thursday.
Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola said Bozell’s comments, including accusations that the ruling African National Congress practiced “racial discrimination” against white people, disregarded diplomatic protocols and South Africa’s judicial sovereignty.
Bozell reportedly acknowledged the country’s history requires redress and expressed willingness to cooperate with the government. Senior foreign affairs official Zane Dangor said the ambassador apologized and expressed regret.
Relations between South Africa and the US have been tense under Donald Trump’s second term, with disputes over trade and diplomacy.
