Researchers from Edith Cowan University in Australia have developed an AI system that could identify drunk and dangerous drivers using 3D facial analysis instead of traditional breathalyzers.
The technology uses a deep learning model to detect blood alcohol concentration with nearly 90% accuracy and driver fatigue with about 95% accuracy, while also identifying emotions such as anger that may contribute to road accidents.
Lead researcher Abdullah Tariq said the system analyzes facial signals such as blinking and subtle movements to determine intoxication levels—categorized as sober, moderate or severe—and allows continuous, real-time monitoring without requiring driver cooperation.
