China has led the release of a new international standard defining the core features of stem cell data, the Standardization Administration of China said, marking what officials described as a key step in supporting research, clinical application and industrial development in regenerative medicine.
Stem cells, which can self-renew and differentiate into multiple cell types, are widely seen as promising tools in regenerative therapies. The new standard addresses a longstanding gap in the international standardization of stem cell data.
China has now spearheaded four international standards in the field, covering basic research, data, applications and safety testing, forming a preliminary framework for the sector. Zhao Tongbiao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the adoption underscores China’s leading role in stem cell research and clinical trials.
