U.S. Defense Department gives Anthropic Friday deadline to drop AI curbs

The United States Department of Defense has given AI firm Anthropic until Friday to allow unrestricted military use of its technology or face possible action under the Defense Production Act, a Cold War-era law that allows the government to compel companies to meet national security needs.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon, where the dispute centered on the company’s refusal to permit its Claude models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. The Pentagon warned it could also designate Anthropic a supply chain risk, potentially harming its ability to secure government contracts.

The company said it remains in good-faith discussions and wants to support national security within responsible limits. Meanwhile, the Pentagon confirmed that Elon Musk’s Grok system has been cleared for classified use, and that OpenAI and Google are close to similar approvals, increasing pressure on Anthropic.
