German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday warned that attempts to decouple from China would be a mistake, saying such a move would harm Germany’s own economic opportunities. Speaking in Berlin before departing for Beijing, Merz said cutting ties with China would amount to “shooting ourselves in the foot.”
Merz is leading a delegation of senior executives from around 30 major German companies across sectors including automotive, chemicals and manufacturing. During the visit, he will attend a China-German economic advisory committee meeting and hold talks with Chinese leaders. His itinerary also includes visits to Mercedes-Benz, Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics and Siemens Energy.
