A powerful winter storm brought blizzard conditions to the northeastern United States, affecting about 65 million people from Maine to Virginia. Heavy snowfall paralyzed travel, shut down schools and caused widespread power outages, with more than 5,700 flights canceled nationwide, according to FlightAware. Major disruptions hit John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia and Newark airports, while Rhode Island’s main airport suspended all flights after nearly a meter of snow fell.
Over half a million homes and businesses lost power, with Massachusetts hardest hit. Zohran Mamdani said New York City received up to 48 centimeters of snow, with some areas surpassing 60 centimeters, and warned residents to stay home. Officials said the storm could rank among the city’s 10 worst in 150 years, prompting the closure of the UN headquarters in Manhattan.
At least seven states declared emergencies, including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. Governors Kathy Hochul and Maura Healey deployed National Guard members to assist with response and recovery efforts as authorities warned of continued dangerous conditions.
