Chinese speed skater Ning Zhongyan won gold in the men’s 1,500m at the 2026 Winter Olympics, setting an Olympic record time of 1:41.98. He defeated pre-race favorite Jordan Stolz, who took silver, and defending champion Kjeld Nuis, who won bronze. The victory marked China’s first Olympic gold medal in this event and Ning’s third medal of the Games.
Ning, 26, became emotional after the race, saying the win made all his sacrifices worthwhile. He credited improved mental strength since finishing seventh at the 2022 Winter Olympics. His performance followed a clear race strategy and included a personal best time.
The result is considered significant because the 1,500m has traditionally been dominated by European and North American skaters. Ning said he is proud of his achievement but believes he can still improve.
