Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her cabinet resigned on Wednesday ahead of a new parliamentary session to elect the next prime minister. Cabinet ministers submitted their resignations en masse during a morning meeting, allowing the new premier to formalize cabinet appointments afterward, with the chief cabinet secretary set to announce the lineup. As president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Takaichi is widely expected to be reinstated, given her party’s two-thirds majority in the lower house. Since her cabinet was formed in October and the ruling coalition recently won the February 8 general election, local media report that significant changes to the cabinet are unlikely.
