SpaceX prioritizing lunar ‘self-growing city’ over Mars project, Musk says

Elon Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX has shifted its priority to building a “self-growing city” on the moon, saying the goal could be achieved in less than a decade.

In a post on X, Musk said SpaceX still plans to pursue a city on Mars within five to seven years, but described the moon as a faster path to securing the future of civilization. His comments follow a Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX has told investors it will prioritize lunar missions, targeting an uncrewed moon landing as early as March 2027.

The move marks a departure from Musk’s long-standing focus on Mars, which he previously described as SpaceX’s primary destination. Musk has also faced scrutiny for repeatedly setting ambitious timelines that have not been met in past projects.
