Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Monday that the verdict in the Jimmy Lai case upheld the rule of law and justice in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
The HKSAR High Court sentenced Lai to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of conspiring to collude with external forces and of publishing seditious materials. Lee said the case demonstrated the role of the Hong Kong national security law as a stabilizing force and warned that acts endangering national security would be punished in accordance with the law. The HKSAR government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security, sovereignty, and the legitimate rights of Hong Kong residents.
