WHO: Bangladesh reports Nipah Virus death in Rajshahi Division

Bangladesh has confirmed a death from Nipah virus (NiV) in Naogaon District, Rajshahi Division, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported. The patient was admitted to hospital on January 28 and died the same day. Laboratory testing confirmed NiV on January 29, with the case officially reported on February 3.

Health authorities have identified 35 contacts, all of whom tested negative for the virus. The patient had consumed raw date palm sap, a known NiV risk factor. No additional cases have been reported.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has implemented public health measures. WHO considers the national, regional, and global risk low. Nipah virus, transmitted from fruit bats or animals, has a high mortality rate but early supportive care improves survival.
