OpenAI has launched a desktop app for its coding tool, Codex, aiming to capture a larger share of the growing AI code-generation market. The app is designed to let users manage multiple AI agents over extended periods and use code to gather and analyze information, making complex tasks more accessible. OpenAI hopes the user-friendly interface will attract more business and individual users amid rising competition in the AI coding space.
The coding market has seen rapid growth, with competitors like Anthropic dominating through tools such as Claude Code, which reportedly reached $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months of release. While AI coding tools are not yet able to fully replace human developers, they significantly speed up programming tasks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that AI models maintain relentless focus and effort, describing them as “never running out of motivation,” highlighting their potential to augment human work.
