British PM highlights importance of engagement during Shanghai trip

During a visit to Shanghai on Saturday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the importance of engagement in building mutual trust and respect between nations. Speaking to Chinese middle school students, he cited the parable of “The Blind Men and the Elephant” to stress the need to understand China as a whole.

On Friday, Starmer visited Shanghai’s historic Yuyuan Garden, where he admired lanterns combining Chinese and British cultural elements, including the River Thames, the Huangpu River, Scottish tartan, and horse motifs for the Lunar New Year. This marks the first visit by a British prime minister to China in eight years. Starmer, leading a delegation of executives from over 50 major British firms across sectors such as finance, medicine, manufacturing, and culture, said engagement is key to creating opportunities and fostering a strong future for both countries.
