Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said France had stood by Greenland “without hesitation” amid recent tensions after the United States warned it wanted to take control of the autonomous Danish territory. Speaking in Paris alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, Nielsen said the issue concerned respect for international order and global values. Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to defending territorial integrity and sovereignty under the UN Charter and said Europe must strengthen its defense posture in the Arctic. Frederiksen stressed that Arctic security is a priority as the global order faces increasing pressure, calling for a stronger Europe to defend shared values. The talks followed a recent US-NATO framework agreement that appeared to ease Washington’s stance on Greenland, after earlier remarks by President Donald Trump suggesting the territory should be taken over or purchased for US security reasons. France, which has opposed those proposals and faces potential US tariffs along with other European countries, said it would continue to support Denmark and Greenland as the EU looks to expand investment in the region.
