Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that a document on U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine is complete, but key territorial issues with Russia remain unresolved. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said land in eastern Ukraine is the main obstacle to peace.
Zelenskyy said trilateral talks involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia are a positive step, with meetings set to begin Friday in the United Arab Emirates. The dispute centers on Russia’s claim to Ukraine’s Donetsk region, where Ukrainian forces still control part of the territory.
U.S. President Donald Trump said a peace deal is “reasonably close” and that his meeting with Zelenskyy was productive. Russia and Ukraine have both signaled that compromises will be needed to end the nearly four-year conflict.
