Israeli authorities on Tuesday demolished buildings at the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) compound in East Jerusalem, replacing the UN flag with an Israeli one. The move was immediately condemned by UN officials, including Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called it a violation of international law and demanded the restoration of the compound.
UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini described the demolition as an unprecedented attack on the agency, warning it set a dangerous precedent for the safety of international organizations. The Palestine Liberation Organization, Palestinian Foreign Ministry, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia also condemned the action, calling it a breach of international law and urging global intervention.
Israel views all of Jerusalem as its capital and has accused UNRWA of links to Hamas, which the agency denies. In recent years, Israel passed laws restricting UNRWA operations, including bans on utilities and access to facilities.
