Japanese PM Takaichi says general election set for February 8

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced that she will dissolve the House of Representatives on January 23, leading to a snap general election on February 8. This will be the first election since she took office in October. Opposition parties have formed a new alliance to challenge the ruling coalition. However, the move has drawn criticism, with the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper saying there is no clear reason for dissolving parliament so early and calling it a political move to gain advantage, warning it could harm Japan’s democratic process and future stability.
