Toll of train derailment in Spain 21 dead, 30 seriously injured

At least 21 people were killed and more than 70 injured after two high-speed trains collided near Cordoba in southern Spain on Sunday, authorities reported. The accident occurred around 19:45 local time when a train on the Malaga–Madrid route derailed for unknown reasons near Adamuz and struck an oncoming Madrid–Huelva train, causing both to derail. Thirty of the injured were in serious condition.
Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente described the collision as “terrible,” noting that the last two carriages of the derailed train hit the first two of the other train. Emergency services and local residents assisted with rescue operations, while Spain’s Military Emergency Unit helped transfer passengers and provide first aid. Rail services on the affected lines will be suspended until at least Tuesday. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the Spanish royal family expressed condolences to the victims’ families. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.
