‘U.S. takeover would end NATO’: EU extends security offer to Greenland

The European Union said it could help defend Greenland if Denmark requests assistance, with EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius warning that any U.S. military takeover of the territory would effectively destroy NATO and seriously damage transatlantic relations. Speaking in Sweden, Kubilius said the EU could deploy troops and strengthen military infrastructure in Greenland under its mutual defense clause, though he does not expect an invasion. European leaders, including those of France, Germany, Britain and Denmark, reaffirmed that decisions about Greenland belong only to Denmark and Greenland, while stressing the Arctic’s growing strategic importance. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson criticized U.S. rhetoric toward Denmark and Greenland, saying it undermines international law and stability. The article also explains that President Trump’s interest in Greenland is driven by its strategic Arctic location, emerging shipping routes, military value, and vast mineral and energy resources, which are increasingly important amid climate change and global competition.
