Greenland’s party leaders issued a joint statement rejecting U.S. claims over the island, saying, “We do not want to be Americans” and stressing that Greenland’s future must be decided by its own people.
While affirming continued cooperation with the United States and other Western countries, they insisted that any discussions about Greenland must respect international law and Greenland’s Self-Government Act.
The statement followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said the United States would acquire Greenland “one way or another,” prompting strong opposition from Greenland’s political leaders.
