China began their AFC Under-23 Asian Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Iraq in Riyadh. China’s best chance came in the second half when Wang Yudong’s close-range shot was saved, while goalkeeper Li Hao made two late key saves to secure the point.
In the same group, Australia defeated 10-man Thailand 2-1 after coming from behind.
China are aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time and have brought a strong squad, mostly made up of regular Chinese Super League players, including seven with senior national team experience.
China will next face Australia on Sunday and Thailand on Wednesday. The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals.
