The United States may lose its voting rights in the UN General Assembly because it has not paid its UN membership dues for 2025. Under UN rules, a country that owes two years or more of contributions can be suspended from voting, unless the UN decides the situation is beyond its control.
This warning comes as President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. to withdraw from 66 international organizations, including many UN agencies. The U.S. has already left UNESCO, the World Health Organization, and the UN Human Rights Council, and has stopped funding the UN agency that supports Palestinian refugees. The administration now funds only programs that match its policy priorities.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he regrets the U.S. withdrawals and stressed that UN contributions are legally required under the UN Charter. He added that the UN will continue its work despite the U.S. decisions.
European leaders strongly criticized the U.S. move, especially its withdrawal from climate organizations like the UN climate convention and the IPCC. EU officials said global climate cooperation is essential, and Dutch and EU leaders warned that rejecting science and international cooperation will lead to serious human and economic consequences as climate disasters worsen.
