Amid growing global challenges and a widening governance deficit, China proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) in September 2025 to promote reform and cooperation in international governance. Anchored in five principles—sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and concrete action—the initiative aims to address global deficits in peace, development, security, and governance.
The GGI has gained broad international support, with more than 150 countries and organizations welcoming it. In December 2025, the Group of Friends of Global Governance was established at the UN, attracting 43 member states to advance dialogue and coordinated action.
International experts have praised the initiative for aligning with UN principles, amplifying the voice of developing countries, and promoting inclusive, action-oriented multilateralism. Observers highlighted China’s efforts to translate the initiative into practice through platforms such as the Belt and Road Initiative, SCO, BRICS, mediation efforts, and regional conflict resolution, viewing China as a constructive and stabilizing force in global governance reform.
