European leaders expressed strong support for Denmark after U.S. President Donald Trump again suggested acquiring Greenland, calling it vital to U.S. defense. His comments raised alarm in Europe, especially following recent U.S. military action in Venezuela.
Denmark and Greenland firmly rejected the idea. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the U.S. has no right to annex Greenland and warned that any military move against a NATO ally would effectively end the alliance. Greenland’s prime minister called the remarks unacceptable.
Leaders across Europe, including those from Norway, Finland, Sweden, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Austria, stressed respect for sovereignty and said Greenland’s future is for Denmark and Greenland alone to decide. Several highlighted that borders cannot be changed by force and that Denmark, including Greenland, is protected under NATO.
The European Union also reaffirmed its commitment to national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of the UN Charter, signaling a united European stance against any threat or annexation of Greenland.
