Xi Jinping calls on China, ROK to safeguard fruits of WWII victory

China’s President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held talks in Beijing, where both sides emphasized strengthening bilateral relations and safeguarding peace in Northeast Asia. Xi said China and the ROK should uphold the outcomes of World War II, remember their shared history of resisting Japanese militarism, and stand on the “right side of history.”

Xi highlighted that China and South Korea are close neighbors with deep economic ties and shared responsibilities for regional stability and global development. He called for maintaining friendly cooperation, managing differences through dialogue, respecting each other’s development paths and core interests, and expanding cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, green industries, and the silver economy. He also stressed opposing protectionism, supporting multilateralism, and increasing people-to-people exchanges.

Lee Jae Myung reaffirmed the ROK’s commitment to improving relations with China, respect for China’s core interests including the one-China policy, and appreciation for China’s role in preserving historical sites linked to Korea’s independence movement. He expressed hope to deepen economic cooperation, take advantage of opportunities from China’s upcoming five-year plan, and strengthen exchanges and multilateral coordination.

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of 15 cooperation agreements covering science and technology, environmental protection, transportation, and economic and trade cooperation.
