A devastating fire at a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during a New Year’s Eve celebration has killed around 40 people and injured at least 115, many of them seriously. The blaze broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m., overwhelming mostly young revelers and prompting a major emergency response involving ambulances and helicopters.
Swiss authorities said the burns were so severe that identifying the victims could take days, with forensic teams using dental records and DNA. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials said it appears to have been an accident. There were no reports of Chinese casualties as of Thursday evening.
The tragedy has shocked the country. Swiss President Guy Parmelin postponed his New Year address, flags were lowered to half-mast, and Valais canton declared a state of emergency. Local residents gathered for a silent vigil, mourning one of the deadliest incidents in modern Swiss history.
