Chinese President Xi Jinping delivers 2026 New Year message

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered his 2026 New Year message in Beijing, highlighting the successful completion of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and calling for a new phase of high-quality development while reaffirming the country’s openness to the world.

Xi said China met its major economic and social development targets from 2021 to 2025, with economic output expected to reach about 140 trillion yuan in 2025. He noted gains in scientific and technological innovation, including advances in artificial intelligence and domestically developed chips, as well as growing strength in culture, tourism, and global popularity of Chinese cultural IPs.

On the international front, Xi said China continued to expand opening-up, hosted major multilateral events, advanced the Hainan Free Trade Port, announced new climate commitments, and promoted global initiatives aimed at fairer global governance.

Looking ahead to the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan in 2026, Xi called for deepening reform and opening-up, promoting shared prosperity, and taking solid steps to write a new chapter in China’s development journey.
