China’s National Radio and Television Administration will launch a month-long nationwide campaign from January 1, 2026, targeting the spread of improperly altered “AI mashup” videos. The move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of generative AI to distort, parody, or vulgarize classic films, TV dramas, animations, and culturally significant works.
The campaign will focus on removing AI-altered content involving the Four Great Classical Novels, historical and revolutionary themes, heroes, and role models, as well as videos promoting violence, vulgarity, or distorted values. Authorities will also crack down on content that misrepresents Chinese culture or history and on “cult-style” animations that alter popular children’s cartoon characters. Afterward, regulators plan to strengthen long-term governance to ensure ongoing oversight.
