China released a survey showing Huangyan Dao’s coral reef ecosystem is generally healthy, with nearly 39% coral coverage and high biodiversity. The report notes past military activities, illegal fishing, climate change and starfish outbreaks as threats, while saying strict protection under the national nature reserve will help preserve and restore the ecosystem.
