U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, reiterating that the island is strategically important for U.S. national security and expressing support for potentially acquiring it. Trump’s comments and appointment drew immediate criticism from Denmark and Greenland, whose leaders emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people and cannot be annexed.
Danish officials, including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, called the move unacceptable, while Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed that the island will decide its own future. The European Commission also voiced support for Denmark and Greenland, highlighting the importance of sovereignty under international law.
The announcement coincided with the U.S. suspending leases for several East Coast offshore wind projects, including some developed by Denmark’s Orsted. Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources make it a key area for U.S. defense and economic interests, though it remains culturally and economically dependent on Denmark.
