Trump administration expands list of countries subject to entry restrictions

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation expanding travel restrictions to cover around 40 countries, effective January 1, 2026. The restrictions target countries deemed deficient in screening, vetting, and information-sharing, posing national security or public safety risks.

Full entry restrictions now apply to about 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Iran, Syria, and South Sudan, as well as holders of Palestinian Authority travel documents. Partial restrictions have been applied to 20 other countries, including Nigeria, Angola, and Cuba.

The move follows previous restrictions announced in June, recent security incidents, and reviews of green card holders from “countries of concern.” The policy reflects the administration’s ongoing efforts to tighten U.S. immigration and entry standards.
