PM Albanese says Australia’s intelligence systems will be examined following Bondi Beach shooting

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government will review Australia’s intelligence and security systems after a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The attack happened during an event marking the start of the Jewish festival Hanukkah and killed 16 people, including one of the attackers.

Authorities confirmed that the attackers were a 50-year-old man, Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. They were motivated by ISIS ideology and had traveled to the Philippines in November, where they may have received military-style training from Islamic militants. The trip is still being investigated.

Albanese said there were clear failures in how intelligence agencies and police shared information, especially since Naveed Akram had already been investigated in 2019 for suspected links to an ISIS cell. The government will now examine how federal intelligence agencies work with state and territory police to prevent future attacks.

The Australian National Imams Council strongly condemned the attack, stating that ISIS is an evil terrorist group whose ideology goes against Islam.

As of Wednesday, 22 injured victims remained in hospital, with nine in critical condition and 13 in serious but stable condition.
