How Austria’s potential hijab ban inspired a protest by schoolgirls

Austria’s parliament has passed a law banning girls under 14 from wearing headscarves in schools, with fines of up to $1,150 for parents of repeat offenders. The government says the measure protects girls from oppression, while critics and Muslim parents argue it infringes on religious freedom and targets voluntary wearers.

Teachers will report violations, and police will enforce penalties. This is Austria’s second attempt after a previous ban was struck down by the constitutional court. Similar hijab and face-covering debates continue across Europe, with countries like Germany and Belgium limiting only full-face coverings.
