Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Wednesday accused Japan of deliberately provoking a Chinese aircraft carrier formation and spreading disinformation regarding a “radar illumination” incident. Guo stated that Japan is the provocateur in this situation and should be held accountable for orchestrating what he described as a political stunt.
During a regular press briefing, Guo emphasized that Chinese media had already released audio and relevant data to clarify the facts of the incident. He asserted that China’s military exercises in the region, including the “radar illumination” issue, fully complied with international law and practices, and that the maneuvers were conducted professionally, safely, and without fault.
Guo pointed out that Japan had initially claimed it had not received prior notification of China’s flight drills, only to later admit it had received the information. He questioned Japan’s motives for sending warplanes into China’s pre-announced exercise zones, engaging in what he called hostile surveillance and disruptive maneuvers, potentially escalating tensions and generating media attention.
The spokesperson urged the international community to see through Japan’s actions and not be misled, stressing that Japan’s allies should also remain cautious and not be swayed by Japan’s narrative. Guo called on Japan to acknowledge its role in the strained China-Japan relations, take responsibility, and retract erroneous statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
