China’s nomination of Hezhen Yimakan storytelling for UNESCO recognition was approved at the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, India. The art form, which was previously on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, has now been moved to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Additionally, the safeguarding plan for Hezhen Yimakan storytelling was added to the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
Hezhen Yimakan storytelling is a traditional oral art practiced by the Hezhe people, one of China’s smallest ethnic groups with a population of just over 5,000. This storytelling form, performed in the Hezhen language, blends singing and speaking to tell stories about the group’s history, legends, hunting and fishing practices, rituals, customs, and moral values. The art form plays a significant role in preserving the culture and heritage of the Hezhe people.
With this new addition, China now has 45 entries on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists, making it the leading country in terms of total entries.
