Elon Musk on Saturday condemned the European Union for imposing a €120 million fine on his social media platform X for breaching transparency rules under the Digital Services Act, calling the penalty “insane” and vowing to direct his response at the officials involved. Musk also posted that “the EU should be abolished.”
The ruling has drawn criticism from U.S. officials, who argue the fine threatens free speech and unfairly targets American tech companies. President Donald Trump warned that the United States could introduce additional tariffs on the EU if such penalties continue.
The European Commission said X violated the DSA through deceptive design of its paid blue checkmark system, insufficient transparency in its advertising database, and failure to provide researchers with required access to public data. The Commission warned that the platform’s verification model exposes users to impersonation scams and other forms of manipulation.
