Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow to discuss ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Before the meeting, Putin warned Europe it would face a quick defeat in any war with Russia and rejected European peace proposals as unacceptable.
Trump has tried multiple times to negotiate peace, but no progress has been made. A leaked U.S. draft plan worried Ukraine and Europe because it appeared to meet several Russian demands. Europe responded with its own counter-proposal, and the U.S. and Ukraine later said they had updated their peace framework.
Putin accused European countries of trying to sabotage Trump’s peace efforts. He also threatened to cut Ukraine off from the sea after drone attacks on Russian tankers. Ukraine said his comments show he is not serious about peace.
Putin said current talks are not a full agreement yet but could become the basis for one, while warning that if Ukraine refuses a deal, Russia will push further into Ukrainian territory. The war, ongoing since Russia’s 2022 invasion, remains unresolved.
