Japanese lawmaker urges Takaichi to retract Taiwan remarks to ease tensions

A Japanese opposition lawmaker has urged Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to retract her recent remarks about China’s Taiwan region, warning that Japan–China relations are already worsening and will continue to deteriorate if the comments stand.

Taro Yamamoto, leader of the Reiwa Shinsengumi and a member of the House of Councilors, said in a recent speech that Takaichi’s statements contradict Japan’s long-held diplomatic position and risk causing “serious damage” to the country. He argued that the problem lies not in China’s reaction, but in Japan making comments that stray from its official stance.

Yamamoto also criticized Japan’s push to strengthen its military and take actions that could provoke neighboring countries, saying such moves “invite danger” and serve only to undermine national interests. He warned that failing to acknowledge Japan’s own mistakes—while defending or downplaying Takaichi’s remarks—could escalate tensions and even risk conflict.

He emphasized that China’s strong warnings stem from Japan forgetting “the root of the problem,” and urged the government to correct course before the situation worsens.
