Maduro pledges loyalty to Venezuelans as Trump faces scrutiny at home

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro reinforced his defiance against U.S. pressure, declaring at a Caracas rally that Venezuela would never accept “a slave’s peace” or colonial subjugation. His statement comes amid heightened U.S. military activity near Venezuela, including strikes on alleged drug-smuggling operations that have killed dozens and drawn bipartisan concern in Congress.

Lawmakers have threatened to force a congressional vote if the Trump administration carries out military strikes inside Venezuela, while investigations are underway into a September 2 operation that some argue violated international law. Despite domestic scrutiny, Trump has broadened his warnings, suggesting any country producing drugs for the U.S. could be targeted, raising fears of wider regional conflict.

The Vatican urged dialogue and economic measures rather than military action, while Venezuela has approved the resumption of repatriation flights for migrants, reversing a recent announcement halting operations. Over 13,000 Venezuelans have returned this year amid stricter U.S. immigration policies.
