A deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong has killed 146 people and injured 79. Police say 159 previously reported missing residents have been confirmed safe, while 100 cases remain untraceable due to incomplete information. Search operations in the affected Tai Po residential blocks are nearly complete, and all buildings have been deemed structurally safe.
The Hong Kong government is providing free temporary housing for over 1,500 displaced residents and will give HK$200,000 to each bereaved family and HK$50,000 to affected households. Donations to the relief fund have reached HK$800 million.
The fire began on scaffolding during a renovation project and spread rapidly across multiple buildings. Three men linked to the renovation work have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, and officials have ordered city-wide safety checks on scaffolding. The ICAC has launched a corruption investigation related to the project.
A city-wide mourning period is underway, with flags at half-mast and government events canceled.
