Hundreds of Japanese citizens rallied outside the prime minister’s office on Tuesday, urging Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to retract recent comments suggesting possible military involvement in the Taiwan Strait. Protesters denounced her remarks as dangerous and unacceptable.
Criticism has also come from political figures and experts abroad. Hiroji Yamashiro of Japan’s Social Democratic Party said Takaichi’s comments violate Japan’s commitments made when diplomatic ties with China were normalized in 1972, and warned that any military role in the Taiwan issue—China’s internal affair—would risk dragging Japan into conflict.
Analysts including Australian researcher Robert Barwick and UK scholar Jenny Clegg called Takaichi’s remarks provocative, citing concerns over Japan’s right-wing historical revisionism and efforts to dilute its pacifist constitution. They warned that ignoring established international agreements and historical facts could escalate regional tensions and undermine global peace.
