China urged Japan to retract Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan, saying they violate the core political agreements that underpin China-Japan relations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that Japan has long recognized the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China and has pledged to respect China’s position that Taiwan is part of its territory. She cited the four key political documents—from 1972, 1978, 1998, and 2008—that legally define Japan’s commitments. Mao said Japan must not distort these principles, overstep boundaries, or “play with fire,” and should honor its promises with concrete actions.
