The 5th WHF opens to address climate change and health governance

The 5th World Health Forum convened in Beijing with participants from 21 countries and regions discussing “Climate Change and Health: Responsibility, Governance and a Shared Future for Mankind.” Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that climate change is an urgent public health crisis requiring countries to move beyond rhetoric, prioritize concrete action, and strengthen multilateral cooperation. China’s strategy was detailed by Shen Hongbing of the National Health Commission, who highlighted the nation’s commitment to implementing mitigation and adaptation strategies, including the China National Climate Change and Health Adaptation Action Plan (2024–2030). WHO Regional Director Saia Ma’u Piukala urged the building of more resilient and sustainable health systems, while Tsinghua University President Li Luming showcased the institution’s interdisciplinary efforts in research and talent cultivation. Forum Chair Margaret Chan noted that public health’s frontier has expanded to the climate negotiation table, calling for young people to step up and for institutions like the Vanke School of Public Health to foster cross-sector talent for a more equitable global health community. The forum aims to build international consensus on climate governance and health promotion, with subsequent discussions focusing on topics like health risk assessment and early warning systems.
