Asia News Wrap: Cyclone Montha storms through E India, and more

  Cyclone Montha hits India: A severe cyclonic storm struck Andhra Pradesh, India, causing two deaths and flooding 87,000 hectares of crops. The storm, with winds up to 90 kmph, damaged roads, 14 bridges, and numerous culverts.

  Man admits to killing former Japanese PM Abe: Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, admitted to murdering former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his first court hearing in Osaka. He allegedly shot Abe with a homemade gun in July 2022 during an election speech in Nara.

  Thailand to tighten vaping regulations: The Thai government is revising its Tobacco Products Control Act following a sharp rise in e-cigarette use. Users aged 15 and older have increased from 78,252 in 2021 to over 400,000 in 2024. The Ministry of Public Health will draft the new regulations.

  Hong Kong home prices rise: Property prices in Hong Kong SAR increased by 1.3 percent in September, marking the sixth consecutive month of growth. Private home prices also rose by 1.3 percent, pushing yearly gains to 1.1 percent since December.

  Myanmar election campaigning begins: Election campaigns started with party flags and balloons displayed on streets while security forces patrolled. One in seven parliamentary districts will not hold elections, and ASEAN will not send observers.
