Following Wednesday’s elections in the Netherlands, with over 99 percent of votes counted, the liberal Democrats 66 (D66) hold a narrow lead over the far-right Party of Freedom (PVV). In the Dutch system, the party with the most votes is usually given the first chance to form a coalition, and PVV leader Geert Wilders has pledged to uphold this principle, despite his party losing over 10 seats this election.
D66 leader Rob Jetten, 38, could become the next prime minister, potentially becoming the country’s youngest and first openly gay leader. After exit polls, Jetten highlighted the election as a victory against populist and far-right movements. Key priorities for D66 include addressing the housing crisis, tackling climate change, supporting education, and promoting a stronger pro-European stance.
No party came close to the 76 seats needed for a parliamentary majority, leaving coalition formation uncertain. The center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) is expected to finish third and remain a likely participant in the next government. Political analysts and voters note that the election results may signal a move toward greater stability after years of volatility, though coalition negotiations could take months.
