U.S. President Donald Trump began the final leg of his Asia trip in South Korea, expressing optimism about finalizing a stalled tariff deal with President Lee Jae-myung. Trump received a grand welcome in Gyeongju, where this year’s APEC forum is being held.
He said a trade deal with South Korea could be completed “very soon,” though officials on both sides were cautious about any breakthrough. The two nations had previously agreed in July that South Korea would invest $350 billion in the U.S. to avoid major tariffs, but negotiations over the deal’s structure have since stalled.
During their meeting, Lee awarded Trump the country’s highest honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, and promised to increase defense spending. Lee also requested U.S. approval to reprocess nuclear fuel for submarines, which is currently restricted. Trump, in turn, pledged to help resolve South Korea’s issues with North Korea.
