A global study found that human movement is now about 40 times greater than that of all wild land animals, birds, and insects combined. Since the Industrial Revolution, human movement has increased by 4,000 percent, while marine animal movement has fallen by 60 percent.
Most human travel is by car, motorbike, or plane, with each person moving about 30 km a day. Researchers say a single airline uses as much energy in a year as all wild birds combined.
A related study showed wild mammal biomass has dropped 70 percent since 1850, while the weight of humans and livestock has grown sevenfold, highlighting humanity’s dominance and its heavy toll on nature.
