U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent tariff increase on Canadian goods after an Ontario TV ad criticized U.S. tariffs using clips of former President Ronald Reagan.
Trump called the ad misleading and a “hostile act,” saying Canada ignored his demand to remove it before it aired during the World Series. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pause the ad after the weekend.
The decision sparked backlash in Canada, especially from industry and labor groups. Unifor president Lana Payne accused Washington of trying to weaken Canada’s economy and urged retaliation.
Analysts said the dispute reflects deeper U.S.-Canada trade tensions, including recent Canadian countermeasures against U.S. automakers.
