France’s Socialist Party has threatened to bring down Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s government by Monday unless the 2026 budget includes higher taxes on billionaires.
Party leader Olivier Faure said the Socialists would file a no-confidence motion early next week if the government fails to compromise, accusing it of unfairly targeting retirees, youth, and families instead of the wealthy.
With support from both the far left and far right, the Socialists could topple Lecornu’s fragile minority government.
The standoff comes as France faces economic strain, with business activity falling and credit agencies like Moody’s and S&P warning of possible downgrades. Lecornu, under pressure to cut the deficit—the largest in the eurozone—plans to tighten spending by over 30 billion euros next year.
A key budget vote is set for November 4 before the bill heads to the Senate.
